Before, vegetable garden was often restricted to the far corner of the backyard with its potential beauty being disregarded. The only purpose of maintaining it is to take advantage of what can be harvested from the garden that can be utilized as medicine or for cooking. What’s neglected here is the fact that vegetable garden can present a refreshing ambience to your home’s yard, enough to captivate one’s attention. And not only that, having a well designed vegetable garden will add sophistication to its setting.

In many traditions, we have grown to acknowledge the infinite benefits of cultivating a vegetable garden to our backyards. Ranging from cut leaves or flowers to fruits and vegetables all provide us with both health promotion and food for the table. Later as time goes by, this same value has been recognized with the addition of providing us a place for peaceful retreat.

When it comes to designs, reflect on the many possibilities within the garden. Of course, your main objective is to supply useful and edible plants that can look very attractive comparable to regular floral garden. So for the selection of plants, everything must be taken into account.  Functionality should be mixed with both harmony and symmetry to yield an exuberant design.

Aside from selection of plants, factors to contemplate upon when making your design include choosing a suitable site of your garden. Yes you have your backyard, but can it be seen by sun? Does it have access to good drainage? Does the soil have potential in growing vegetable plants?

Some other factor would be the placement of your plants. This includes deciding whether you will make use of beds or to just plot the plants directly into the ground. Just bear in mind that your choice should conform to the availability of the space.

With these well thought out, the design process can now begin. In other words, basic tenets of vegetable garden design must be followed to help you to direct and inform your choices and come up with a functional and attractive vegetable garden.

About

Im a huge fan of small garden design. Growing up in a little country town on the outskirts of Sydney, I learned a lot about how plants grow and how environments work together. After moving to the City I was intrigued at how you can get even the smallest space to turn into a garden if done right.
